![]() About GuatemalaThe Telecommunications sector/industry is one of the most dynamic in the Guatemalan economy. Considerable investments in fixed and mobile lines, as well as in fiber optics, have reflected a two-digit growth for this sector in the past seven years. This positive trend is mainly due to market deregulation. According to Pyramid Research (2002), an index that measures the degree of freedom in the mobile phone segment, Guatemala is the most competitive and open market in Latin America. Regarding connectivity, Guatemala is the only country in the region with access to the top three telecommunications networks: Arcos, Maya 1 and Emergia, resulting in greater efficiency, higher speed and a 99.9875% redundancy factor. In addition, there is sufficient bilingual labor force adequately trained for data processing duties, with less than 0.01% Contact Center saturation rates. Guatemala also provides great services for Spanish speaking Contact Centers because its population has one the few neutral accents amongst Spanish speaking countries. Moreover, the cost structure, in terms of wages and service suppliers, is one of the most competitive in Latin America. For these and other reasons, Guatemala has become a strategic place to attract investments in Contact/Shared Service Centers and BPO activities emerging from the United States and other countries in search for more competitive structures. |
